Welcome Rock Trails is a trails network being built in Garston, which is in the heart of New Zealand’s lower South Island. The trails are being built mostly by hand and are designed sensitively to utilise and work with the terrain. This concept became central to the design of the logo, which takes the idea of the mountain spurs and valleys to make a setting for a trail that connects them. The project itself has three components: Adventure, History and Ecology, which all play a role in the experience that visitors will have once it opens. These three pillars of the experience are embodied in the colour choices, with red for adventure, green for ecology and gold for the gold mining heritage of the area.
The project itself is quite fascinating as it utilizes the old water race courses from the gold mine era, and visits diverse areas of native New Zealand plants such as alpine tussock and beech forest and much more.
